1. Check the System Compatibility

The software runs under 64-bit Microsoft Windows operating systems. OSX and NIX operating systems are not supported unless they are hosting a Microsoft Windows virtual machine. The operating system of the software can either reside on a user's physical machine or a virtual machine housed in an enterprise data-centre. In general, three basic software prerequisites are required:

  1. Microsoft SQL Server Express (recommended version is 2014 or later)

  2. Microsoft Excel (recommended version is 64-bit Excel 2016 or later)

  3. Microsoft Windows 64-bit operating system with Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 & 4.7.1

  4. Recommended RAM of 8GB to 16GB (with a minimum functional RAM of of 4GB)

All applications and libraries that are required by the software are installed at the time the software is provisioned to users. No other stand-alone software licenses or installations of third-party linear programming applications are required.

Only 64-bit Microsoft Windows operating system installations are supported. Installation under Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and any 32-bit operating system is not possible.

The software can be used within a hosted desktop environment such as Citrix or Windows Remote Desktop (RDP). The hosting data-centre can be on-premises or off-premises.

Software Prerequisites

The software needs to be provisioned for the specific version of Microsoft Excel that is installed. Before software installation is undertaken then the following information is needed:

  1. Is the version of Microsoft Windows that is installed a 64-bit operating system?

  2. Is the version of Microsoft Excel that has been installed 32-bit or 64-bit?

  3. Is there an existing version of Microsoft SQL Server installed on the system?

  4. Is the necessary Microsoft .NET Framework installed on the system?

Please Conduct All Checks Before Installing the Software

Before downloading and attempting to install the software for the first time, each of the four checks outlined below needs to be completed. You should also record this information for use during the software installation process.

Note: The software interface installer will check the operating system version, the Excel version and the .NET framework, and will not install if these are not correct. Please make sure to undertake ALL the checks below before requesting a download of the software interface installer.

Check for Microsoft Windows

Mandatory Software Requirement

Microsoft Windows must be 64-bit. The software cannot be installed on a 32-bit version of Windows.

Only 64-bit Microsoft Windows operating system installations are supported. Please check that the version of the operating system is 64-bit and not 32-bit. Note that the steps below check the operating system only. The steps for checking the installed version of Microsoft Excel are in the next section.

Windows 7

Click the Windows Start button icon at bottom-left of the screen and then right-click the ‘Computer’ menu item and select ‘Properties’. The Windows operating system type can be found as shown below. Please check that the operating system is 64-bit. The software cannot be installed on a 32-bit version of Windows.

Windows 10

Right-click the Windows Start button icon at the bottom-left of the screen and click 'System'. The Windows operating system type can be found as shown below. Please check that the operating system is 64-bit. The software cannot be installed on a 32-bit version of Windows.

Check for Microsoft Excel

Mandatory Software Requirement

A screenshot of the installed version of Microsoft Excel showing that it is either 32-bit or 64-bit application needs to be submitted when requesting the Software Interface.

Excel 2007

Microsoft Excel 2007 is always installed as a 32-bit application on all operating systems.

Excel 2010

Open ‘Excel’ and then click ‘File’ at the top left, then click ‘Help’. The version of the Microsoft Excel application can be found as circled below. Please note if Excel is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Excel 2013 & 2016

Open ‘Excel’ and then click ‘File’ at the top left, then click ‘Account’, and then click ‘About Excel’. The version of the Microsoft Excel application can be found as circled below. Please note if Excel is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Check for SQL Server Express

Mandatory Software Requirement

A version of Microsoft SQL Server Express must be installed before the software is installed.

CREATE DATABASE Permission denied in data base 'master'

All users of the software need to be able to create and delete databases from the SQL Server instance used by the software. All users therefore need to be assigned the Server Role of 'dbcreator' at a minimum. It is common practice when using Microsoft SQL Server Express to give all end users full 'sysadmin' rights on the instance as this is local to their machine and not used across the enterprise.

If a user has not been assigned either of these two Server Roles then the error CREATE DATABASE Permission denied in data base 'master' will result and the user will not be able to use the software successfully.

To check if a version of Microsoft SQL Server Express is present on the machine, then mouse over the code block below and select 'Copy to Clipboard' by clicking the icon that appears on the right of the code block.

C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Then open 'Windows File Explorer' and paste the command above from the clipboard into the address bar as shown below and press Enter. Scroll down the list of files and look for 'SQLServerManager12' or similar (the number at the end of the file name may be different, i.e. it can be any number from 10 to 15 onwards depending on the version).

If there is no SQLServerManager file to be found then Microsoft SQL Server Express is not present on the machine and will need to be downloaded and installed.

If SQLServerManager file can be found then double click it to open the SQL Server Configuration Manager application as is shown below.

In SQL Server Configuration Manager, on the left pane, click 'SQL Server Services'. The right pane will then list services related to SQL Server. If SQL Server Express is installed, the service will be listed as SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) or SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) or similar.

A green triangle icon indicates that database engine service is running. A red square icon indicates that the database engine service is stopped.

If the database engine service is showing a red square icon, then in the right pane, right-click the 'SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)' database engine service and then click 'Start'. Confirm that the database engine service starts and the icon changes to a green triangle.

Check for .NET Framework 3.5

Mandatory Software Requirement

The Microsoft .NET Framework version 3.5 must be installed before the software is installed.

The software currently has a Microsoft .NET Framework prerequisite of .NET 3.5.

When using Windows 7 this is normally always preinstalled and existing, however when using Windows 10 the .NET 3.5 framework almost always needs to be manually added.

To check if the framework is present then mouse over the code block below and select 'Copy to Clipboard' by clicking the icon that appears on the right of the code block.

C:\Windows\System32\OptionalFeatures.exe

Then right-click the Windows Start button icon at the bottom-left of the screen and click 'Run'. Paste the command above from the clipboard into the command box and click OK.

The Windows Features dialog box will open and the first entry should be '.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)'. If the check box for this entry is empty then click the check box and click OK. The machine will connect to the internet and download and install the necessary .NET framework prerequisites. If the check box is already shaded as shown below then the .NET 3.5 framework is installed and no further action is required.
